Hi guys and gals, I'm James, a designer and rock journalist for Fireworks Magazine, along with a Roger Taylor fanatic (and all round Queen fan). I'm the proud owner of all the Queen albums, all the Cross and Roger solo albums, and virtually everything else Roger has done (either officially or unofficially, ). Roger has been a big hero of mine for a long time, and I never saw the Cross because I was too young, but I've seen Roger on the Electric Fire tour, and I was in attendance for Queen and Paul in Sheffield. I think it's an absolute delight to have a forum dedicated to the Cross, who were really, really good. This could be Heaven For Everyone! JG

Well my rather limited drumming knowledge stems from having a father, Uncle and Grandfather who were all drummers. I got a few free lessons from them, but always prefered singing - whether that was a good or bad thing depends on what you think of my voice! When I've written my own songs the drums usually come out pretty good, but I tend to pragramme them on my Mac as I haven't sat at a kit for fifteen years and would probably suck now! I'm too used to the computer! I do remember watching Roger with open mouthed awe at the Sheffield gig though. When I saw him on the Electric Fire tour, he did a little bit of drumming, but mostly he sang. To see him drum most of a gig was quite something, and he was VERY powerful in the fast section of 'I Want It All'! And I would agree Roberta - 'My Baby Does Me' screams drum machine loops to me. So does 'Rain Must Fall', but to be honest, all the drums on 'The Miracle' sound very much of the time. Even the bass on 'Invisible Man' - that's very synth sounding, because that's how things sounded in the 80's. Everybody went technology crazy. JG

I think I can answer a couple of those for you Roberta - although my drums skills are not in Stuarts league, so if I'm wrong Stuart, please feel free to say so!
The "reversed stick" is fairly common in rock music, but you probably won't find it in other genres. Some drummers I've seen play with the sticks reversed when playing live, but not in a studio. I'm guessing it gives a more powerful hit live?
A lot of Queen's 80's material has drum machines on it, or sampled drums, because that was the sound of the times. I know Hot Space and A Kind Of Magic spring to mind, along with The Works.

Welcome Appy. "Blue Rock" does take some tracking down. There is a bootleg version of it out there, with MBADTK on the same disk. The bad news is MBADTK has a lot of it's tracks cut down to cram it on. The good news is, "Blue Rock" is exactly as the original. I don't usually recommend bootlegs, but this is quite handy because the original of "Blue Rock" is like gold dust. Mine cost me far more than it should.

I chose the Roger vocal because when you listen to Shove It, if you have the version with Freddie singing, it interrupts the flow of the album - it stands out too much because of the Queen overtones Freddie's voice gives. I actually burned a copy of what is effectively the American release, using Roger's version, because it fits better. Freddie sings it superbly, but his version on Shove It is just a weaker version of the Queen effort - not vocally of cvourse because it's the same, but the arrangement Roger, Brian and John put on the Queen version was much more in keeping with Freddie.
It's weird how history could have turned out. Here in the UK, the single had Roger on vocals, the album version had Freddie. If the single had been Freddie singing it, I reckon a lot more people would have bought it, and almost certainly made it a hit. Who knows where Shove It as an album would've charted then?

I can second that - I have a bootleg of the second night of the Crhistmas Cracker shows, and I took the Tim Staffel songs out. Dreadful, just dreadful!
