Paul is the man behind such sterling rock classics as "All Right Now", "Wishing Well", "Shooting Star".... he is a skilled vocalist, as well as an able guitarist and pianist. On his first solo album "Cut Loose" he played everything himself. Paul does a fine job of 'We Are The Champions" - he doesn't try to copy Freddie, he just delivers a top quality vocal. He openly admits he wanted no part of singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and he stays true to his word. Freddie sings it on 'ROTC' in a very moving tribute. Freddie is as much as part of 'ROTC' as anyone, getting the biggest cheer of the night. I was there, it's not an overdub. Freddie's presence is all over it. 'Love Of My Life' is handled by Brian alone, with a second empty stool next to him which was a lovely touch. Roger handles 'Days Of Our Lives' and there's a fantastic video montage of Queen from the Japan tour back in the seventies while Roger sings. None of it is tacky, it's a celebration of Queen's awesome legacy, and the band make sure Freddie and John are credited accordingly. I will openly admit I was horrified when Paul Rodgers was announced as the vocalist, because I thought he was all kinds of wrong. But Paul made me eat my words and blew me away that night in Sheffield. I can't recommend 'ROTC' enough Roberta - especially the DVD version. It's much more of a Queen concert than you might imagine, and salutes the past, while paving the way to the future. Brian and Roger handle plenty of the singing, and they play like it's twenty years ago! Plus it's great to see Roger singing in front of such a huge crowd! JG

As I'm sure most of you are aware, Brian announced that he, Roger and Paul would be going to a secret studio to start writing new material in October! I for one am extremely excited. Paul is a tremendous songwriter on his own, as are Brian and Roger, so I'm intrigued to see what these three hitmakers can produce together.
Of course, there's every chance Roger might handle some lead vocals too, which is always a plus!

And it's a perfect example of being a great song in it's own right, but wouldn't have suited the Miracle that well. I love "Hang On In There" but it's a bonus track. I would be weird if it had been placed elsewhere on the album.
"Dog With A Bone" incidentally was recorded and played for the Queen Fan Club. It was never intended for any album. There are two versions out there - one with a message from each member, and one that trims it down to anb (almost) finished song, which is the one I have. It's a good, mid tempo rocker, duetted by Roger and Freddie. Could easily have come from a jam, as there's a lot of Freddie-eqsue piano and Brian riffing in it.
The only track Roger wrote that I aren't keen on is "Drowse". The style he's used and the vocal he's applied if effective, but it's just not my thing. Everything else he wrote I love - even the daft stuff like "Two Sharp Pencils!"

Rock It (Prime Jive) and Tenement Funster probably draw level at the top, because they are the two main Roger songs on my two favourite Queen albums.
I'm quite fond of some of the lesser knows ones too, like "Hijack My Heart" and "Human Body". And I don't know who wrote it, but I love the Roger/Freddie duet of "Dog With a Bone"!

With Paul you know you are going to get a good, professional performance, and if they did go into a studio, they could well tour again to air the new songs. Paul has a huge collection of classics under his belt, as do Roger and Brian. To see what they could do together is mouth-watering. Delving into a vault to use old stuff not considered good enough originally, and re-working it is basically what they did with "Made In Heaven", and although I like it, it wasn't a fitting swan song for Queen. Not in the same league as Innuendo, and that's probably because there was only really five new songs. Everything else was a re-hash.
I've heard many Queen tracks that never made albums - from B-sides to unreleased stuff to Fan Club only material. While I love some of these songs like "Dog With A Bone", "Hijack My Heart", I Go Crazy".... look at when the track came from, and try to picture it on the would be parent album, and suddenly the songs seem very ordinary indeed.
I'd much rather have Roger, Brian and Paul write something new and move on, instead of using old Freddie vocals that were probably scrapped for a reason. When a vocalist has passed away, get somebody else or pack it in. Don't try to use the archives to keep things going, because you'll damage the reputation of the band. It's been done with the Beatles, it's been done with Elvis, it's been done with Hendrix.... and nobody cares. It's still the old stuff they listen to.

I advise you to check out the Queen + PR DVD. Paul does a great job, and he doesn't sing all the lead. Some is Roger, some is Brian, and of course Spike is playing keyboards throughout. It is great to see Roger sing in front of a Queen sized crowd! Paul sings "We Are The Champions" superbly, but the band are smart enough to know only one man can sing Bo Rhap. Freddie sings it all except the fast bit, so there's no need to worry! JG
