Forget you're a Cross/Roger fan for a while. Just think of the song and try to say - honestly! - which version you prefer! I was never so keen on Queen version - meaning that I like it, but it doesn't thrill me so much. Maybe their arrangement fits the spirit of the song best...but I really like the guitar on the 2 Cross versions. I'm very torn between Freddie's and Roger's vocals there...but maybe that arrangement goes better with the style Roger used for it, quieter than Freddie's...Let's go with Roger's version (though I love Freddie's vocals!).

I chose the Roger vocal because when you listen to Shove It, if you have the version with Freddie singing, it interrupts the flow of the album - it stands out too much because of the Queen overtones Freddie's voice gives. I actually burned a copy of what is effectively the American release, using Roger's version, because it fits better. Freddie sings it superbly, but his version on Shove It is just a weaker version of the Queen effort - not vocally of cvourse because it's the same, but the arrangement Roger, Brian and John put on the Queen version was much more in keeping with Freddie.
It's weird how history could have turned out. Here in the UK, the single had Roger on vocals, the album version had Freddie. If the single had been Freddie singing it, I reckon a lot more people would have bought it, and almost certainly made it a hit. Who knows where Shove It as an album would've charted then?

I take Rogers version but it quite something that you can take a song all different ways and almost have different songs out of one. Rogers song is just more a song for after Freddie but I still miss Freddies voice but we still have our Roger.

I had never thought of that before, but I guess you're right about the charts...and about Freddie's version on "Shove it" too. I have to add I like Roger's backing vocals (chorus) a lot! When he sings "This could be heaven for everyone..." I'm like (meaning "all ears and in love with that bit"!!! ;D). Funitmom...I could have quoted you as well!

I prefer the Queen version too, although both are great. I'm not sure why I don't like Roger's voice so much on this one, I just prefer Freddie's singing for that particular song.

I like both versions, but love the spoken introduction on The Cross one.

I went with the roger version - I'm not overly keen on the queen version and I have issues with that being on Made In Heaven (don't ask) Freddie's version is good too though
